In 1918, Edward Gaw, an immigrant from China,
established Fremont’s Fine Foods and located the shop on 616 Central SW. Why
the name "Fremont's?" One version is Mr. Gaw chose Fremont’s (after General
Fremont) from a list of trademark-free names because to him it symbolized the
possibilities of the Western Frontier. The other story came from a long time
customer who knew Mr. Gaw. She remembers him saying the name came from the Port
of Entry in California.
From the beginning, Fremont’s brought gourmet and European foods to New Mexico.
In 1959, Edward’s son, Gene Tang, continued the family business and on March
17, 1965, moved Fremont’s to a brand new Coronado Center. Fresh coffee beans,
teas, and Asian foods were added to the Fremont’s selection.
In 1983, Gene retired and passed the business on to his son, Richard Tang, and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Mary Tang. Richard introduced the Simply Delicious Box
Lunch and expanded the European (especially from the UK) foods selection.
On Memorial Day weekend 2005, Fremont's moved back to the Northeast Heights and
opened its fourth location. The fourth generation, Aimee Tang along with her
husband, Jacob Rasmussen, now own and operate the business. In the afternoons,
you just may find four generations of Tangs working away: Ann Tang (wife of
Gene), her son Richard, her granddaughter Aimee, and her great-grandson
Christian Emil.
We invite you to stop by, try our lunches, and peruse the finest of
international and specialty foods.
